Embracing Christ - Definition

The major intent of the second level of the Come and See phases is to assist the new believer in connecting in the fellowship of the local church and teach them basic truths of the faith. A disciple who has completed this phase has committed to vital relationships with other Christians in the context of a small group and other fellowship opportunities beyond their participation in public worship. They have gained assurance of salvation and a basic understanding of the Bible and foundational beliefs of Christianity.
 
Duration: 4 - 24 months or longer, depending on the point from which the person begins.
 
Disciple’s Involvement:
·         Asks questions, seeking truth.
·         Observes with limited responsibility.
·         Connects in vital fellowship with other believers
·         Serves, but does not lead.
 
Commitment: Moves from a personal commitment to Jesus Christ and the unity experienced in public worship to connecting with other Christ followers in vital fellowship and the intimacy of a small group.
 
Distinctives: A disciple who has completed this phase:
 
·         Has the assurance of salvation
·         Understands basic Christian doctrine
·         Has a hunger to continue to learn and grow in God’s Word
·         Is beginning to exhibit basic Christian behaviors
·         Has connected in vital relationship with fellow believers by participating in a mid-sized and a small group.
 
Transformational Indicators: By the end of the Follow Me phase a disciple should demonstrate the following beliefs, values, behaviors, attitudes, character traits…
1.      Rejoices in and learns about his/her new life in Christ by joining with other believers (the Body of Christ). Hebrews 10:24-25
2.       Experiences assurance of salvation, a change in self-perception and identity as a beloved child of God, as he/she comes to know the glorious new life of power and joy prepared for him/her in Christ. 2 Corinthians 5:17
3.       Is introduced to the person of the Holy Spirit. Ephesians 1:13 
4.       Desires to learn and grow in God’s Word—the Bible. 2 Timothy 3:16-17
5.       Establishes the foundational beliefs of the Christian faith. 1 Peter 2:2-3
6.       Experiences a sincere yearning and love for God and is eager to share and express this love. 1 John 4:19
